Drone-mounted scanner visualises Finsch ore pass to determine serviceability

Mining Weekly – 11/01/2021 – Owing to the use of drone-mounted light detection and ranging (Lidar) equipment, diamond miner Petra Diamonds’ mine engineers have been able to visualise the condition of ore passes for the first time at the Finsch underground mine, in the Northern Cape. The use of Emesent’s Hovermap Lidar technology, through local drone services provider Dwyka Mining Services, helped the miner avoid an estimated five months of remediation work and associated costs of about R5-million. Petra has an interest in eight mines in South Africa and Tanzania, with a combined output of about 3.7-million carats a year… lire l’article

Mali, French army deny wedding party killed in strike against militants

Reuters – 07.01.2021 – BAMAKO (Reuters) – Mali’s government and the French army on Thursday denied allegations that a French air strike killed civilians attending a wedding, insisting that only Islamist militants were hit. The incident on Sunday in central Mali’s remote Douentza area comes at a moment of rising anti-French sentiment in Mali regarding the former colonial power’s eight-year military intervention. Jeunesse Tabital Pulaaku, an advocacy group for Fulani herders, published a list on Thursday of 19 people it said were killed, including the father of the groom, and seven more it said were wounded in the strike while attending a wedding… lire l’article

U.S. Military Bases: Could a Drone Swarm Attack Mean Doom?

National Interest – 09/01/2021 – Massive numbers of small drones around the world are presenting an entirely new threat landscape for the Pentagon which must now confront networks of AI-enabled, coordinated attack drones sharing information, passing along targeting details and in some cases even exploding themselves upon high-value target areas. U.S. military installations, command and control centers and even air, ground and sea war platforms could themselves quickly fall victim to drone swarm strikes. A newly released U.S. Department of Defense Counter-Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems Strategy explains that the current threat circumstances call for new countermeasures, offensive weapons, allied cooperation, doctrine and weapons requirements specifications… lire l’article

Pentagon’s Counter Small Drone Strategy

USNI News – 08.01.2021 – The exponential growth of small unmanned aircraft systems (sUAS) creates new risks for the Department of Defense (DoD). Technology trends are dramatically transforming legitimate applications of sUAS while simultaneously making them increasingly capable weapons in the hands of state actors, non-state actors, and criminals. Small UAS may also pose hazards to DoD operations in the air, land, and maritime domains when controlled by negligent or reckless operators. The Department must protect and defend personnel, facilities, and assets in an environment where increasing numbers of sUAS will share the skies with DoD aircraft, operate in the airspace over DoD installations, and be employed by our Nation’s adversaries. In response to this challenge, the Department initially emphasized the deployment and employment of government and commercially-built materiel to address the immediate risks posed by sUAS; however, it resulted in many non-integrated, redundant solutions… lire l’article

U.S. Department of Defense – Counter-Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems Strategy

Media Defense – 07/01/2021 – The US Department of Defense leadership recently approved a new strategy to lead and direct Counter-Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (C-sUAS) activities across the Department. This strategy will provide the framework for addressing sUAS hazards and threats in a variety of operating environments, including the U.S. homeland, host nations, and contingency locations. The Department’s management structure and processes are not written in stone, they are a means to an end–empowering the warfighter with the knowledge, equipment and support systems to fight and win. Department leaders will adapt their organizational structures to best support the Joint Force… voir le document

Dubai tech firm develops magnetic shield to counter drone attacks

Gulf News – 03/01/2021 – Dubai: Cusp Technologies, a Dubai-based tech solutions company, has developed a new system for using magnetic beams in many applications specially in defense and space. One of its main applications is to repel hostile drone attacks. The innovative system is based on the use of advanced magnet technology to create a « magnetic shield » to repel hostile attacks from drones, which are either directed remotely, or have pre-programmed routes. The technology also provides the potential to expand its defense capabilities and create a magnetic shield that can counter any kind of military attacks. “Drones widespread in the past few years, so the risks that these aircrafts pose have increased. This could cause damage to the main infrastructure, and paralyze both trade and travel in many countries,” said Mohamed Saleh, founder and chairman, Cusp Technologies… lire l’article

Japan to Host Futuristic Cargo Drone Logistics Facility

Inside Unmanned System – 08.01.2021 – Japan’s regulatory environment, commitment to UAV cargo delivery and maturing 5G infrastructure are prime reasons why Asia’s largest logistics real estate conglomerate has chosen the country to build what it claims will be “the world’s first cargo drone logistics facility.” The new drone port will be part of ESR Cayman’s new 365,00-square-meter, nine-story distribution center, which is slated for completion in 2023. A starter fleet of at least 24 drones is slated to deliver as much as 14,000 tons of cargo daily to distribution nodes across the region. ESR officials believe the project will show its tenants how autonomous eVTOL systems can revolutionize commercial cargo transport by quickly moving high-value, time-sensitive cargo directly from futuristic distribution facilities to their final destination… lire l’article

Patent for Remote ID Systems Goes to Oregon-Based Drone R&D Company

Drone Life – 08.01.2021 – One of the first movers in this race is Ariascend, an Oregon-based drone research and development company, which this week announced that its CEO, Kenji Sugahara, had recently been awarded a patent for broadcast remote identification of drones. U.S. Patent 10,825,345 issued by the United States Patent Office in November, calls for drones to have a “digital license plate,” that can broadcast information about the drone to observers on the ground, including law enforcement agencies and members of the general public. In an interview, Sugahara said the genesis of the patent sprung from a white paper he wrote in 2017 and submitted to the FAA’s Advisory and Rulemaking Committee. Many of the ideas outlined in both the white paper and the patent itself were incorporated into the FAA final rule… lire l’article

BVLOS HF Command & Control Demonstrated with MQ-9A UAS

UST drones – 08.01.2021 – General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. The company has developed a C2 capability that does not require a Satellite Communications (SATCOM) link and can provide BLOS connectivity at distances of up to 8,000 miles, depending on transmit power and link geometry. An MQ-9A Block 5 unmanned aircraft was used for the demo, equipped with the U.S. Government’s Collaborative Operations in Denied Environment (CODE) autonomy software. The aircraft was flown with improved diagonal tails with conformal HF antennas incorporated into the leading edges… lire l’article

6th-gen stealth fighter likely to include lasers, AI and drone control

Fox News – 06/01/2021 – A stealthy, supersonic, semi-autonomous sixth-generation fighter maneuvers undetected through heavily armed enemy air space, evades radar detection to jam the adversary’s command and control systems with EW (Electronic Warfare) weapons, gather, analyze and transmit targeting data across huge areas of terrain in milliseconds using AI-empowered computing … then the fighter is able to launch and operate groups of nearby mini-drones, fire air-launched hypersonic missiles and then incinerate enemy aircraft with fighter-jet fired precision laser weapons all while flying too quickly and stealthily to be targeted. Taking this hypothetical mission yet another step farther, what if the sixth-generation fighter not only performed many of its missions with complete autonomy but also operated with a kind of self-regenerating coating or even composite armor which used synthetic biology to essentially regenerate and restore external structures lost or damaged by enemy fire… lire l’article
